OOM: Nothing to do is a good thing
Aug. 27th, 2008 09:47 pmAfter only two days in Demeter's house and domain, Teja has already found a sort of routine. One that involves drifting around on foot and on horseback, accidentally drifting by the café in the nearest village in late mid-morning for seom coffee with milk (which Teja finds he actually likes), and drifting by again for a glass of wine somewhere towards the evening. And mazbe taking home a bottle
Taking back a bottle -- no point in thinking of it as 'home'. Home is that crazed tavern at the end of the known cosmos...
Teja had brought the dark glasses he had been given some time ago, but that was not enoug -- to protect his skin, he'd added a floppy straw hat that he'd found in a shop he happened to drift by.
He is wearing that now, sitting in the shade of a tree in the bottom of Demeter's garden, playing his guitar all by himself.
Rest. It hadn't happened in Teja's life. Ever.
The last time he had been doing nothing in the country had been -- it had been in Fiesole, in Witichis' villa rustica, waiting a few dazs for his host, and Totila, and the others, to arrive.
Rauthgundis had been there, feeding him trout and bread and wine and olives, willing to speak or listen if Teja wished it; followed by a gaggle of extremely over-awed country maids, and little Athalwin who would stare at Teja with huge serious blue eyes, especially when the strange, silent warrior played his harp.
That rest had taken five days; then Totila arrived, and Hildebrand, and Teja was drawn into serious conversations and complicated politics again.
Rauthgundis had been displeased by the way Totila 'overshadowed' Teja, as she put it -- one of the few times ever she ventured an opinion about anything beyond her own sphere. But of course, the bright midday sun would always outshine midnight...
A bright midday sun like the one Teja is shielding from now, in the shadow if this tree; without thinking, he plays a simple melody that he used to play for Rauthgundis and Athalwin.
