OOM post: With Pyrrha, after having been to Gotland

This is not a good time to linger in the bar and maybe be spoken to by people that can be, occasionally, annoying.

So Teja picks up the one cat -- Myrrh --  that comes to greet him as he returns from Gotland with Pyrrha, orders dinner from a rat, to be served in his room in a while, and then offers his hand to Pyrrha, to walk upstairs with her.

Pyrrha undresses while he's making the dinner arrangements--it's much quicker than getting dressed had been, and it makes her feel more like herself, less burdened.

She gets her zombie bag and sneakers from the bar, where she'd left them, but doesn't bother putting her shoes back on--it's not like there's all that far to go, and if she ends up stepping in something sticky on the way, well, socks are washable.

"Either one is fine," she says. "I'm not picky."

Really, it's just nice not having to worry about where her meals are going to come from, or what she'll have to do to earn them. That he would care about her preferences is just a bonus.

"And some hot chocolate," she says. "It's pretty cold out."

She may not get cold, but something warm and comforting would be nice right about now. Andi used to make her hot chocolate.

Her tastes do tend to run a bit young--in some ways she's a glorified teenager; she'd been in her late teens when she got involved with Loki and hasn't had a full-time existence since then. It takes a while to grow.

"Maybe a little whipped cream in it," she says. "But not too much."

"The kind you butter, or the cookie kind?" she asks. "I mean, I wouldn't say no to either kind. But it's good to know what you're getting into."

"Good," she says. "I mean--I like the other kind too, you can get these sandwiches that are fried chicken on biscuits and they make a really good breakfast, but they're not so good with hot chocolate."

She lived for a while over a restaurant with the best chicken biscuit sandwiches ever. The fact that they hadn't charged her anything had nothing to do with her opinion that they were the best.

"You should try the chicken biscuit sandwiches sometime, though," she says, combing her fingers through her hair to undo the braids. "You might like them. I like pizza for breakfast better, but they're pretty close."

"Tell me that's not the only breakfast you've had here," she says. "There's so many other good things. I like breakfast sandwiches, since I'm a messy eater, but they got eggs and toast and bacon or sausage or whatever, there's pancakes and French toast and waffles, omelets, muffins, there's cereal both hot and cold--they even got breakfast tacos. It's a whole world of possibilities."

"I can't judge--I normally just have pizza," she says. "People like what they like. But it's good to try other things."

Most of the time, anyway. Some things are just bad ideas that only seem good at the time.

"When I was a kid, we used to have oatmeal for breakfast most of the time," she says. "Scrambled eggs and bacon on Sundays. Things that are cheap and easy to make in large amounts--to this day I still don't like oatmeal. You can dress it up with cinnamon or maple syrup or whatever, but it still brings back memories."

"No bread and water for us," she says, "and no oatmeal either. Only food with flavor, from now on."

So technically bread and oatmeal have flavor... but that's not the point.

"So do a lot of things you've probably never tried," she says. "And a lot of things I've never tried either. I like food, though. I like getting to try different things all the time. We didn't, really, when I was a kid. But now I can."

"That's what we had when I was a kid," she says. "We ate because we were hungry, and just to satisfy that hunger. We ate what there was to eat, pretty much the same things all the time, and we didn't complain. Eating may be a necessity, but putting too much thought into food is a sin. But you know..."

She shrugs. "There are people who go crazy with it in the other direction, get really picky about expensive gourmet ingredients and everything, and it's fine if it makes them happy. I never had the money for that. But I can make a pretty good range of food for not a lot of money."
